Though they breach for a variety of reasons, humpback whale breaches typically produce impressive surface splashes. However, some speculate that the underwater sound produced by the breach is the important social signal intended.

Breaching (leaping) is often seen from young animals, perhaps a type of play or practice. There are social contexts, such as changing group dynamics, where breaching is not uncommon.
