| Dorsal fin shape varies between species, and often within a species among individuals. Minke Whales, like most fast swimming cetaceans, have a 'falcate' shaped back fin. |
The Finback Whale, the 2nd longest, and very fast, whale species, has a similar dorsal fin shape to the Minke Whale. This one also has a 'notch' from an earlier injury. |

| Known for the ledge (hump) on the back, just in front of the dorsal fin, Humpback Whales show enough variation in the size, shape, and markings on these fins to distinguish individuals. |
In addition to the dorsal fin and tail pattern, sometimes injuries, as the one seen here from a boat strike, leave identifying marks. |
